Distance education is a field of teaching that focuses on technology and instructional system design that aim to deliver education to students who are not physically on-site, in such programs teachers and students may communicate at times of their own choosing by exchanging printed or electronic media, or through technology that allows them to communicate in real time. Many courses of study have currently adapted some sort of use of non-traditional technology to assist students in their studies from non-campus based locations.

Distance education is oftentimes referred to as "Distance Learning" as well, and is simply defined as "a field of education focusing on the andragogy and pedagogy, instructional systems, and technology which endeavor to deliver an education to students who are not physically in a classroom or campus setting." Distance education focuses on delivering quality education for students who are not physically present. It enables students to receive education from at far-off places. Started in 1946, the University of South Africa is one of the oldest distance education universities.

Distance education programs offer quality education through various means such as mail, satellite or other modern technological methods. An individual can join distance education programs either as a full-time or part-time student. Distance education programs were known as correspondence courses. There are also institutions offering distance education programs in theological subjects.
